Quick submission - have your say and shape the emissions reduction plan

Closes 24 Nov 2021

Opened 13 Oct 2021

Overview

The first emissions reduction plan will set the direction for climate action for the next 15 years. It will also set us on a pathway to meeting our 2050 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and biogenic methane targets by implementing policies and strategies for specific sectors, including:

  • transport
  • energy
  • waste and f-gases
  • building and construction
  • agriculture and forestry

The plan will also include:

  • a multi-sector strategy to meet emissions budgets and improve the ability of those sectors to adapt to the effects of climate change, and
  • ways to mitigate the impacts reducing emissions and increasing removals will have on people, including the funding for any mitigation action.

The first emissions reduction plan is due to be delivered by the end of May 2022.

Why we are consulting

The emissions reduction plan will have an impact on all aspects of Aotearoa’s economy and society in some way.

It is important that we ensure all New Zealanders can have their say on proposed emissions reduction policies. As there is a broad range of sectors and issues in the discussion document, we recommend you focus on areas that are relevant to you, your work or organisation.

We want to hear from you about the part you will play:

  • the steps your community can take
  • investments you can make in your businesses
  • changes you can make as an individual

We want to hear how government can support you to make these changes. You know your community best and, therefore, what can be achieved.

Your feedback will assist government in ensuring the policies included in the final plan will lead to lasting and effective change.
