The changes are needed now, and it has to be done through regulation. There is always a few very loud opponents, but examples of smoking ban and plastic bag ban show how quickly changes can be made.
2. What new initiatives would you include in an emissions reduction plan for Aotearoa?
Tell us how you and your community will be impacted by the proposals in the Emissions Reduction Plan discussion document
There is two initiatives I haven't seen before that might be good to investigate:
- blanket traffic speed reduction to immediately reduce energy consumption related to transport (this was already used during war-time fuel shortages in the past). Also, as a sub-option - a speed limit targeted at internal combustion engines could be an option (I believe Germany is considering exactly this on their Autobahns)
- regulation of fossil-fuel powered garden tools such as lawnmowers.
